The Marathon Continues: A New School Year of Opportunities

Updated: Nov 18, 2023

*This blog post was originally published in the Glenwood Springs Post Independent in August 2023, ahead of the new school year. I have since completed my first full marathon!

As we enter another academic year, I continue thinking about the parallels between a marathon and a school year. Full disclosure: I’ve yet to run a marathon, but it’s on my bucket list. I am in week 11 of an 18-week training plan and aiming for my first full marathon in October. I recently completed a half-marathon and could not help but think about school during my race.

Just like a marathon runner takes each step with purpose, determination, and a vision of the finish line, so too do we embark on this journey to deliver on the promise of our mission. Welcome back to another school year in the Roaring Fork Schools, where we are all runners in this marathon to ensure that every student develops the enduring knowledge, skills and character to thrive in a changing world.

Since beginning my marathon training 11 weeks ago, I have experienced vast improvements. Just as a marathon requires preparation and training, so does a successful academic year. Many educators have spent the summer refining lesson plans, exploring new teaching techniques and reflecting on their practices. Just like runners improve their stride and endurance, our teachers refine their skills. Hopefully, like runners, our teachers have also fully immersed themselves in rest and recovery! The dedication of our teachers is the wind at our backs, propelling us toward fulfilling our mission.

For my half-marathon a few weeks ago, I arrived at my race early and did a short warm-up run, and as the countdown began, I thought of the first day of school as the starting line. The air filled with a palpable mixture of anticipation, excitement and a hint of nervousness.

In a marathon, the path is not always smooth, and there are moments when one’s resolve is truly tested. I experienced some bumps and challenges during my recent race: once around the halfway mark due to a steeper elevation gain on a stretch of trail and again during the final mile when my legs and feet were exhausted. Similarly, each academic year may present challenges and obstacles that sometimes seem impossible. Each challenge is an opportunity for growth, a chance to cultivate resilience, problem-solving skills and the ability to adapt. Let’s embrace these moments as chances to develop the skills that will serve our students well.

The community’s support is akin to the cheering crowds along the marathon route. Your encouragement, involvement, and belief in our students and educators amplify the impact of their efforts. Just as runners draw strength from shouts of encouragement, our students and educators thrive when they know their community is rallying behind them. Whether attending a school event, volunteering your time, or simply offering words of encouragement, your presence makes a significant difference. Knowing my son would be waiting for me at the finish line helped me push through mile 13.

In a marathon, there is a sense of camaraderie among the runners, a recognition that everyone is on their unique journey but shares the same ultimate goal. I was not a top finisher in my recent race, which means that at some points, I was running in the opposite direction of the top finishers, and some of the things that helped me along the way were the high fives, fist bumps and “good job!” exchanges throughout. Similarly, within our schools, diversity is our strength. Each individual brings unique experiences, talents and perspectives to the classroom. Our classrooms are microcosms of the world, where students learn from each other. Let’s celebrate the diversity that enriches our schools and helps prepare our students for a globalized world.

The marathon is a test of not only physical endurance but also mental strength. Likewise, education is not just about acquiring knowledge but developing critical thinking, creativity and the ability to navigate the complexities of life.

As we move through the school year, it’s important to remember that a marathon is not solely about reaching the finish line but also about enjoying the journey. Similarly, the educational process is about more than just grades and assessments. It’s about the friendships forged, the “aha” moments in the classroom and the personal growth that happens along the way. Let’s encourage our students to savor these moments, find joy in their learning and appreciate the journey as much as the destination.

As we journey together, I want to express my unwavering belief in every one of our students and educators. My heart, spirit and unwavering commitment are firmly with you. I believe in your potential, your resilience and your ability to overcome any challenge that comes your way. Keep pushing forward, knowing your efforts today will shape tomorrow’s leaders, innovators and change-makers. These guiding principles remind us that we are not just running a race, but we are shaping the future of our community, one student at a time.

In closing, I have been honored to be a part of this incredible journey with you all. Just as a marathon brings people from all walks of life together to pursue a common goal, our schools unite us through our shared mission to ensure that every student develops the enduring knowledge, skills and character to thrive in a changing world.

Here’s to another school year; the journey is long, but the rewards are immeasurable.
